It may take a few days before you get access to your money after arrival. We therefore recommend that you bring along a debit card or credit card with enough cash for at least two weeks. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at most terminals and ATMs, other banking providers may not be accepted. There is an ATM at most airports, but note that cash is rarely used in Norway. Euro is not an accepted currency in Norway.
Accessing your deposit:
- To access your money in the deposit account, while waiting for your Norwegian bank account, you may receive a prepaid card.
- The issuing of a prepaid card costs NOK 200. It can be used (at no cost) in any store, at ATMs and terminals labelled Bank Axept.
- For inquiries regarding the prepaid card: send an e-mail to prepaid.card@samskipnaden.no or visit the nearest office of the Arctic Student Welfare Organization of Norway at your campus.
Opening a Norwegian bank account:
Information on how to open a Norwegian bank account after receiving a Norwegain ID number can be found here.
How to transfer your deposit to your own bank account:
- After you have set up a Norwegian bank account, e-mail The Arctic Student Welfare Organization of Norway (deposit@samskipnaden.no), and send them a confirmation from the bank that includes your name and account number, as well as a copy of your passport.
- All of your money will then be transferred to your new account, except for the service fee of NOK 350, and the money already withdrawn by you, if any.
