Learn how to handle your research data! What is the best way to plan collecting, storing, processing, analysing and archiving your data? How should you structure your data to keep track of it? And how do you find existing data to reuse in your own research?
Data Stewardship provides a comprehensive introduction to responsible research data management and to the professional role of the data steward.
The course covers the whole research data life cycle, from searching for relevant existing data, through organising and documenting datasets, to publishing data in suitable repositories.
Combining theory, hands-on exercises and a micro-internship, it is made up of three modules:
- Module 1: a self-paced online module covering theory and best practice in research data management.
- Module 2: 3 days of in-person workshops where participants apply Module 1 content through collaborative activities.
- Module 3: a 2-day micro-internship with a local employer that gives participants experience of tasks typical for a professional data steward.
On completion you will have the knowledge and practical skills to manage research data responsibly and effectively, both for your own project and more broadly. You will also have gained workplace experience of data management, highly valued by both academic and non-academic employers.
This course is primarily designed for PhD candidates, from any scientific discipline and regardless of the type of data they work with. It is open to PhD candidates enrolled at UiT and to PhD candidates from other European universities. Postdoctoral research fellows may apply and will be admitted only if places remain available.
Course schedule for 2027
Module 1: self-paced online module
- Digital kick-off meeting: 15 February 2027, 1-2 PM CET
- Deadline for completing Assignment 1 (multiple-choice quiz): 15 March 2027
Module 2: in-person workshops
- Workshops in Tromsø: 12-15 April 2027
- Deadline for submission of Assignment 2 (essay): 23 April 2027
Module 3: micro-internship
- 2 days during the period 3-28 May 2027 (depending on your availability and the availability of the hosting organization).
- Deadline for submission of final exam: 11 June 2027
