As an incoming exchange student, one of the most important parts of your application is choosing your courses.

🧭 Your course selection journey:

Follow these steps to find and select courses for your exchange period at UiT:

  1. Read "Before you choose your courses" to understand study load, course levels, admission requirements, and prerequisites.
  2. Review the guidance on timetable and examination conflicts.
  3. Browse the course catalogue for your semester and campus.
  4. Check whether your subject area offers a recommended course package.
  5. Select your preferred courses and suitable backup courses.

📅 Course catalogues are updated twice a year

  • 15 March for the Autumn semester (August–December)
  • 15 September for the Spring semester (January–June)

🎯 Top 8 things to remember before choosing your courses

  1. ✅ Obtain approval from your Erasmus Coordinator for all courses listed in this form.
  2. ✅ Make sure the courses in this form match the courses in your Digital Learning Agreement.
  3. ✅ Choose courses that fit your academic background and degree programme.
  4. ✅ Check the course descriptions, admission requirements, and prerequisites carefully. You must meet the requirements for all courses you select.
  5. ✅ Choose courses from one campus only.
  6. ✅ 30 ECTS per semester is the normal full-time study load.
    • Students who require a visa to study in Norway should normally apply for at least 30 ECTS per semester.
    • Erasmus+ students from EU/EEA countries may take fewer credits if required and approved by their home institution.
  7. ✅ You may apply for up to 60 ECTS in this form. The additional courses you add will serve as backup alternatives if you are not admitted to your preferred courses or if timetable conflicts arise after arriving in Norway.
  8. ✅ Assessment methods vary by course and may include written exams, oral exams, assignments, portfolios, presentations, or fieldwork. ⚠ Please ensure that the final grading system is accepted by your home institution.

📚 Full-time study load

  • A normal full-time semester is 30 ECTS.
  • You may take fewer credits if approved by your home institution.
  • You cannot apply for more than 60 ECTS per semester.
  • Visa requirement: Students who require a residence permit for studies must normally apply for at least 30 ECTS per semester.

🎓 Understand course levels

UiT course codes consist of three letters followed by four numbers (for example: BIO-1001, PSY-2100, JUR-3001).

  • 1000-2000 level: Bachelor's (undergraduate) level
  • 3000-4000 level: Master's (graduate) level

🎓 Master's-level courses normally require a completed bachelor's degree or at least 180 ECTS.

⚠ Exception for Geosciences (GEO): Students nominated under a direct exchange agreement with the Department of Geosciences are eligible for Master's-level courses without having completed 180 ECTS.

⚠ Important: Some departments at UiT only accept exchange students from specific Erasmus+ partner institutions. Always check course descriptions and admission requirements before applying.

Our recommendation:

  • If your subject area offers a conflict-free course package, choose the courses within that package.
  • Choose most of your courses within the same subject field.

We strongly encourage students nominated under exchange agreements in the following subject areas to choose a recommended course package:

  • Social Sciences (Tromsø)
  • History (Tromsø)
  • Social Planning (Tromsø)
  • Language and Culture (Tromsø)
  • Marketing (Harstad)
  • Media, Sport and Tourism (Alta)

✅ Benefits of course packages

  • No timetable clashes
  • No examination conflicts
  • Smoother study experience
  • Less need to change courses after arrival

🔀 Combining courses across departments

You may combine courses from different departments if you meet the admission requirements for each course you want to apply for.

⚠ However, this increases the risk of timetable and examination conflicts. If conflicts occur, you may need to apply for replacement courses after arrival.

Course timetables are published after admission, meaning some timetable or examination clashes may only become apparent after arrival.

Timetables are normally available:

  • July for autumn semester students
  • December for spring semester students

⚙ Special information for engineering students (Campus Narvik)

Most engineering courses in Narvik are offered at master's level.

  • Each semester is divided into two 9-week blocks.
  • Some courses are taught intensively over a shorter period.
  • Combining courses from different subject areas can create timetable conflicts.

⚠ Recommendation: Choose courses within the same subject area or within a recommended course package whenever possible.

Before you start selecting your courses, please make sure that you have applied the correct filters in the course catalogue. This will help you find courses that are available to incoming exchange students.

  • Year / Semester: Select the semester that matches your exchange period (for example, Spring 2027).
  • Type: Select Incoming exchange students.
  • Campus: Choose the campus where you will be studying: Alta, Harstad, Narvik, or Tromsø.

Please note: Not all courses listed in the course catalogue are open to incoming exchange students. Therefore, it is very important to use the correct filters so that you only see courses that are available to you.

Choosing courses without applying the correct filters may result in selecting courses that are not open to exchange students and cannot be approved in your study plan.
