Course contents
The course provides an introduction to general virology with an emphasis on animal viruses. The following topics will be discussed: the structure and properties of a virus particle, virological methods, gene activity and replication, interaction between viral infections and host cell, interaction between virus and host organism, aspects of viral infections and populations.
Objective of the course
The course aims to present an in-depth review of general virology and modern methods (both theoretical and practical) in the study of viruses, to give an idea of the replication and expression strategies used by various viruses and to study this in the context of host cell, host organism and host population.

Teaching methods
Lectures, student colloquia and lab work. The lab work is compulsory and the lab reports need to be approved prior to exam.
Assessment methods
Written exam (3 hours) Grade type: Alphabetical grades (A-F). Course work requirements: laboratory course with report
