This course is obligatory for students at the Master's degree programme in Biology, field of study: Pharmacology and toxicology. This course can also be taken as a singular course.
Recommended prerequisites
BIO-2300 Biochemistry, BIO-2301 General pharmacology and toxicology, BIO-2305 General physiology
Course contents
The course will highlight how toxic substances are handled by the organism (kinetics) and also discuss their effects (dynamics). Exposure will be discussed and mechanisms of toxicity and toxic effects on organs will be described. The effects of environmental pollution in Arctic areas on people's health will be emphasised.
Objective of the course
The course aim to give students the knowledge they will need to assess the consequences of exposure to toxic substances and to evaluate toxic effects. Students will also need to understand the rational underlying limit values and the standards regarding various types of exposure to toxic substances . The student will also learn about the challenges of environmental toxicology in Arctic areas.

Teaching methods
Lectures and a compulsory semester assignment that needs to be handed in and approved prior to the final exam.
Assessment methods
Written exam (4 hours). Grade type: alphabetical grades (A-F).

Coursework requirements
Compulsory semester assignment with an oral presentation.

Re-sit examination
For students who did not pass their exam, or were unable to sit their exam due to medical reasons etc., we offer a re-sit examination early in the following semester.
