About the course

Theoretical and practical subject

Theoretic part: The students will be given an introduction to ecotoxicological research in the Arctic and sub-Arctic region through lectures, seminars and a research project. More specifically, the course will give an overview of bioaccumulation and biomagnification, toxicokinetic (absorption, distribution, biotransformation and excretion) and effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and persistent organic pollutants in Arctic marine animals. Field and lab work: The students will be given a research project in the field of ecotoxicology where they will be familiarized to all different stages of research from field sampling, laboratory analyses and data treatment and interpretation. Students are given the opportunity to manage their own time, but will be given intermediate deadlines that will have to be met. During a day trip on RV Hyas, the student will be introduced to sampling methodologies (e.g. trawl, triangular dredge, plankton nets, water sampling and CTD) and collect organisms for analyses in the laboratory. The organisms (e.g. fish) that are sampled on this trip will be analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, persistent organic pollutants, and effect parameters (e.g., biotransformation enzymes and antioxidants). The students will write a scientific report, in which they will synthetize and interpret the results and discuss them in relation to existing literature.

Admission requirements

It is recommended that students have taken basic courses in biology. The course can be taken as a singular course

Objectives of the course

Students that have completed Bio-2008:

  • Have the knowledge of the different sub-fields within ecotoxicology
  • Understand the different ecotoxicological issues in Arctic and sub-Arctic regions,
  • Understand the process of research (from developing a research question, field work, lab work to finalize a scientific report)
  • Learn to manage their own time and respect deadlines

Learn to take biological samples and process the samples, write scientific reports, find and read scientific relevant literature, work autonomously in the laboratory and perform certain biochemical and chemical analyses.

Language of instruction and examination

The language of instruction is English and all of the syllabus material is in English. Examination questions will be given in English, but may be answered either in English or a Scandinavian language.

Assessment

A scientific report. Oral exam. Grades: Pass/fail

Re-sit examination (section 22):

Students having failed the last ordinary examination are offered a re-sit examination early in the following semester, if the course is compulsory in their study programme, otherwise given that an examination is already being arranged.

Postponed examination (sections 17 and 21):

Students with valid grounds for absence will be offered a postponed examination. Postponed take-home examination is arranged during the semester if possible, otherwise early in the following semester. Postponed written examination is held early in the following semester.

New ordinary examination (section 25):

A new ordinary examination in the teaching-free semester is not offered.
