The course addresses employees form industry, management and business that have a need to learn about marine ecosystems, climate and pollution in the Arctic. The course gives an introduction in the physical conditions, climate forcing and the basic ecosystem function and structure in the European sector of the Arctic Ocean, in particular the north-Norwegian coast, the Barents Sea and Svalbard (Day 1). The most important plankton organisms, the development through the year and organism life cycles are presented (Day 2), followed by and overview about bottom living animals, including the littoral zone (Day 3). The course gives also an introduction how organisms are influenced by trace metals, hydrocarbons and organic pollutants (Day 4). The course ends with a cruise where the basic characteristics of the structure and function of ecosystems are shown (plankton, bottom dwelling organisms, fish).

Objectives of the course

Learning outcome is basic understanding of marine ecosystems and key processes in the European part of the Arctic: physical conditions, climate and ecosystems, planktonic organisms, development through the year, benthic fauna, including the coastal zone, the influence of organisms through trace metals, hydrocarbons and organic toxins.

Teaching methods

Lectures and seminars during one week, 4 days á 6 hours. Cruise on Day 5
