About the course

A multy disciplinary course for PhD-studentes, researchers, open for all.

We live in a visual world; therefore science communication should be visual too. This course will teach you to reflect upon - and train to use - different methods to visualize your science. The theme in fall will be cartography. The aim is to produce a map, and to know the process behind producing a map.

Maximum 20 participants. (10 PhD students, 10 researchers)

Objectives of the course

On the course you will learn:
  • How to communicate your analysis and results through a map
  • To reflect about the role of the research community in science communication, and to understand the power of visual communication
  • To produce a map
  • To use of soft-ware in visualizing your research (Illustrator)
  • To visualize research, and to adjust the message according to the intended audience

Teaching methods

This is an intensive 2-day course (20 hours of teaching), with theoretical lectures, practical exercises and group-work in small groups of 3-4 persons.

Before the course: Find and organize a data set you would like to visualize in form of a map. Optional, but recommended.

English.

Assessment

Deliver a map based on your own data set along with your reflections around the project and the learning process (1 page, Deadline 14.11.12., deliver to elina.halttunen@uit.no). Alternatively, produce a pen-and-pencil map on a data set provided by the lecturer on the evening of 7.11. 17:15-19:00. Pass/Not passed
