Basic Physical Oceanography
Norwegian College of Fishery Science
Theoretical subject.
Included in the course is basic properties of seawater, i.e. physically and chemically, behaviour of light and sound in seawater, atmosphere-ocean radiation balance, tides, mixing, large and small scale circulation, effects of earth rotation, and movement of water masses and its causes. Further general circulation patterns in the worlds oceans are dealt with, as well as some local ones. The laboratory exercises are abot some basic phsyical principles important for ocean processes, and during the seminars the students will present and invite to discuss some central physical themes. The cruise focuses on instrumentation and processing of data. The lessons of instruction are given either in Norwegian or English.
The goal is to give the students knowledge of the basic properties of seawater, i.e. physically and chemically, behaviour of light and sound in seawater, atmosphere-ocean radiation balance, tides, mixing, large and small scale circulation, effects of earth rotation, and movement of water masses and its causes.
