Course contents
This is a specialized course for students in the Master degree programs in Biology and Medical Biology at Institute of Medical Biology (IMB). The course includes writing a thesis based on a problem description within a spesified topic. The supervisor of the course is the same who supervise the student at his/her master degree project. The topic is chosen by the student together with the supervisor, and the supervisor makes the problem formulation wihin this topic. The student is expected to find litterature equivalent to ca. 200 pages from advanced text books and original scientific publications. The student is supposed to work out a thesis of 10-15 pages based on this litterature. The theses has to include a clear problem description, presentation of the scientific publications that is used and a independent discussion. Correctreference list is required. The thesis is not to be a copy of part of the introduction in the master degree thesis, but might give deeper understanding of a chosen topic from this introduction.

Objective of the course
The student will get deeper understanding of a topic relevant for the master degree project, and get training in thesis writing. The student will learn to put together original material from advanced textbooks and scientific papers, and discuss this independently.

Teaching methods
Independent thesis writing. The student will be given supervision during the search for literature and during the writing process.

Assessment methods
The deadline of handing in the thesis is 1st of June in the spring semester and 15th of December in the autumn semester. 2 copies of the thesis has to be submitted to the student advisor at IMB before 3 pm. The mark is set by two internal examiners. Thesis will be evaluate based on format and content, and the student will be given a written feedback.
