Course contents
The course is divided into sections covering theory and practice. The theoretical part of the course comprises a discussion of the theoretical background, and information about methods and calculation. Principles of hydroacoustics when applied in echo sounding and echo integration methods used for both fish and plankton abundance estimation are particularly discussed. The practical part consists of a research cruise where students will gain experience of hydroacoustic fish abundance estimation, take fish samples with trawl, use echosounder and echointegration techniques and computer software. 30h lectures + 6h seminars and instrument practice. 2 days cruise followed by the writing of a cruise report (mandatory).

Objective of the course
Fisheries acoustic has a history of only about 35 years, but acoustic assessment is probably the most frequent method used for estimating fish abundance today. Norway has played a leading role in development of acoustic methods and the course aim to a necessary theoretical understanding and practical training for using such methods.
