Funding & legacy

What the project led to: further funding, new positions, and the Lie–Størmer Centre.

The TFS grant was designed as seed funding, and it worked as such: on the basis of the project, roughly 14 MNOK in further external funding was raised, several new positions were created, and the research environment it built became the nucleus of a national centre.

Third-party funding raised on the basis of the project

  • POEMA and TENORS – two Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks on polynomial optimization and tensor methods, together about 10 MNOK to UiT and four PhD positions in Tromsø
  • A Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship for Tobias Boege
  • A Research Council of Norway grant for a joint project with Germany
  • A grant from the Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir) for a collaboration with partners in India (1.5 MNOK), supporting exchange of PhD students and staff and joint teaching

The Lie–Størmer Centre

The project's most lasting outcome is institutional. An application to the Research Council's Centre of Excellence scheme for a “Lie–Størmer Center” was not funded, but the collaboration it created between Tromsø and Bergen was, and it became the Lie–Størmer Centre for fundamental structures in computational and pure mathematics, a national centre run jointly by UiT and the University of Bergen and co-directed by the project's principal investigator.
